For the first half of the 20th century, the automotive world was built on heavy, stamped steel. While durable and cheap to produce, steel wheels were heavy "unsprung weight" that hindered performance. The transition to aluminum alloy was driven by a need for better cooling, lighter handling, and eventually, the aesthetic revolution of the 1990s.
1. The Pre-Alloy Experiment: 1950s Hybrids
Before manufacturers trusted all-aluminum construction for mass production, they experimented with multi-material designs.

The Cadillac "Sabre" Wheel (1955–1958): One of the earliest OEM "alloys" was actually a hybrid. Manufactured by Kelsey-Hayes, this wheel featured a cast aluminum finned center section riveted to a chrome steel rim. 3. The 1970s & 1980s: The Era of "Tiny" Detail
In this era, wheel design was constrained by casting technology. Manufacturers couldn't yet create thin, long spokes without risking structural failure, leading to "dense" designs.

The "Snowflake" (Pontiac Trans Am): Made famous by Smokey and the Bandit, these 15x7 (and later 15x8) cast aluminum wheels featured a dense cross-fin pattern. They were incredibly heavy compared to modern alloys but were a peak status symbol of the late 70s.

The "Bottlecap" and "Basketweave" (BMW): In the 1980s, BMW popularized the "Bottlecap" alloy (standard on E30 3-series). As styling matured, they moved to the "Basketweave" (BBS-style), which allowed for more open air-flow to cool increasingly powerful disc brakes.

Size Perspective: A 15-inch wheel was considered "large" in the 70s. By the mid-80s, a 16-inch wheel (like those on the Corvette C4) was the cutting edge of performance.

4. The 1990s: The Great Tipping Point
The 1990s was the decade where the OEM Alloy Wheel officially defeated the Steel Wheel for market dominance.

The Rise of CAD: Computer-Aided Design allowed engineers to simulate stress, leading to the "5-Spoke Revolution." Spokes became longer, thinner, and more open.

The 17-Inch Boom: In the early 90s, a 17-inch wheel was a massive "performance" size (found on the Acura NSX or Mazda RX-7). By 1999, 17 and 18-inch wheels were becoming standard on family sedans.
